In 2007, over 81% of cats entering  animal pounds and shelters in North Carolina were killed.

“Euthanasia” in animal control pounds and shelters is the number one documented cause of death of all cats in the U.S.

The bottom line is: being killed is not in a cat's best interests.

To protect your pet on the Fourth of July, take these precautions:

  • Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays.
  • Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.
  • Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you're attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations.
  • If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.
  • Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.
  • Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

If you do not have a pet to keep safe on the 4th of July, Friends For Animals

has plenty of homeless and adoptable pets that would love to spend Independence day

with their new family.

IF you think you don't like cats ...You've never known one.

  • Cats are very affectionate and love to cuddle with you.
  • Having a cat can reduce your blood pressure and prevent heart disease.
  • Cats are very clean -- they bathe themselves!
  • Cats are independent and can be left alone while you are at work.
  • Cats do not need to be housebroken -- using the litter box comes naturally to them.
  • Cats do not need a lot of space. They are perfect pets for apartments and smaller homes.
  • Taking care of a cat can help teach a child responsibility and humane values.
  • Cats get plenty of exercise living indoors. Just 15 minutes of playtime each day will satisfy a cat.
  • Approximately 4 million homeless cats end up in animal shelters every year in the United States. By adopting, you’ll be saving a life.

Don't forget to stop by Animal Control below us on Kirksey Drive to check out the pets on death row.  These pets are euthanized if not claimed or rescued.  If you see one you want to adopt, Friends For Animals can rescue the pet for you so that you can adopt it.

Approximately fifteen to twenty five animals are euthanized daily at the Animal Control shelter due to too many homeless animals and not enough room to save them all.

CORBIN... You good dog, you!

is three years old and has been at the shelter over a year looking for a home. He loves  children. He is so sweet and calm and has the most beautiful blue/grey eyes.   He will play fetch until the cows come home and his beautiful blue eyes just light up when he sees a ball.  Corbin walks great on a leash. Very nice & calm doggie for your home.

TRAINED! (CELL DOG SCHOOL)

Everyone knows it's...

Wendy
Dalmatian/Terrier Mix

Wendy needs and deserves a forever home...

I am very beautiful and have a sparkling personality!  I am very friendly and affectionate with people once I get to know them, and I love to run and play with other dogs.  I was born in March 2008 and spent my entire life in the shelter from the time I was a small puppy until I was lucky to join the

New Leash on Life Program.

I have been taught good manners and perform my obedience cues perfectly when on lead.  I walk well on a leash, love to go for hikes, and have found the agility training
to be loads of fun!

I need someone to belong to, a home where I can fill your life with lots of love, laughter and affection.

I am a good dog.  Come and get your love...

DOGS IN TRAINING / AVAILABLE NOW 2009!

TRAINED! (CELL DOG SCHOOL)

New Leash on Life Program

ZALEY – Small Basenji/Terrier mix – 1 year old female, 30 lbs.

Hi!  I am Zaley and my sister Zanie and I have lived in the shelter since we were 6 weeks old.  I am a bit timid and shy but have blossomed in the New Leash on Life Program.  Everyone tells me I am very pretty, dainty, and sweet.  I am also very smart and am learning my manners, obedience and agility quickly.  I am very affectionate with people, love children, and enjoy playing with other dogs, but most of all I love to cuddle with my trainers.  I am a true home body, will always be very loyal and never stray.  I am so excited for my new family to adopt me – I will be forever faithful and will be the most loving companion they could ever hope for.

All pets available for adoption are also available to foster.  When you foster a deserving animal, you are giving them the home experience they need to be able to become MORE adoptable.  Plus you are getting them out of the population of the shelter so that they can get more attention and care.  This is a wonderful thing to do for a precious innocent animal who deserves a second chance to live.

We are sad to tell you that Edward Davis, 59, of Pete Brittain Road, Morganton, passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. On February 3, 2009, the proposed Burke County Animal Control Ordinance (by Ed Davis)was submitted to the Burke County Board of Commissioners. Please let's work together and make Burke County a safer, better place for our animals! Read about the cruelty case of "Petey" (on the UPCOMING EVENTS web page (bottom), who was chained, tortured and starved. The previous owner walked out of court with no charges because our animal ordinances need to be stricter ...the animals need us to be their voice and speak up against the aweful abuse and neglect that goes on right here in Burke County!!!!! "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Mohandas Gandhi

If each one of us do something as an individual,

we could become an animal welfare army.

Most of the great cruelty shown by men comes from
thoughtlessness or inherited habit.

The time must come when inhumanity
protected by custom and thoughtlessness will succumb
before humanity championed by thought.

Too many homeless, hopeless animals...
Of the more than 30 million puppies and kittens born in the U.S. each year, only one in 10 finds a permanent home, according to the American Humane Association. The rest die of cruelty, starvation, disease, poisoning, or accidents, or they end up in a shelter. Less than 35% of shelter animals are adopted. Some 6 to 8 million adoptable dogs and cats were euthanized (humanely killed) last year.
The primary causes of this tragedy: people who fail to have their pets spayed or neutered, and who abandon or give up pets because of lack of commitment to training the pet.
Sterilization of companion animals is the key to reducing this tragedy. Communities that have established sterilization programs have seen the number of pets euthanized drop by 30 to 60%.

  1. Making history for animal rights in Burke County
Prior to presenting the case, the investigator, a volunteer with Friends for Animals Humane Society of Burke County, and working under Ed Davis, senior investigator, followed up on a tip that led him to the defendant in the case. Over two years ago, Ed led a team that drafted legislation to strengthen the current Burke County laws with regard to instances of animal cruelty. As a witness and an investigator in animal cruelty cases for more than years, Ed had seen it all and knew precisely what was missing from the current state and county laws.
    Morganton News Herald - Jan 16, 2009

The Adoption Center management work closely with city and county to end cruelty to animals. A unique and effective partnership exists between FFA and Burke County Law Enforcement.  Typically, humane societies and law enforcement work in opposition to each other; here there is mutual support and team work.

All donations, including Membership fees are tax deductible    (501c3  tax exempt  organization).

BCFFA makes a lifetime commitment to each animal accepted into our care. None are ever put down except for health or safety reasons.   However, we don't have enough space in the shelter  to save all of them from the dog pound and some have to be left behind.
