Hi! Folks call me Beauty because they say I am so beautiful! I am a Jack Russell mix and was born in April 2007. The dogs are usually very nervous and skittish at first in their new surroundings. As soon as they arrive, the inmate trainers assume calm, assertive leadership roles providing the dogs with the structure and guidance they need to build their confidence. The inmates begin immediately teaching them their manners, i.e. to sit while being leashed, remain calm while being petted, take treats gently, not jump up or bolt through gates and doors. They socialize them with as many people as possible and expose them to the many different activities at the prison. Of course, they keep the dogs’ kennels very clean, bathe the dogs, brush them regularly, and do a lot of petting, massaging, and gentle tugging of ears and tails to get them used to being around children, and also to be more at ease when going to the vet and groomer. The inmate trainers train the dogs in basic obedience and also agility. We keep adding agility equipment and have a fun course. Agility is a great tool for training in that it builds the dogs’ confidence and also their coordination and, because it is a team sport, the dogs learn to pay attention to their handlers. Agility is loads of fun and helps to keep the training upbeat and exciting for both the dogs and the trainers.
Throughout all the training and socializing, the trainers give the dogs praise and rewards when they perform the desired behavior, and when they don’t, the rewards and attention are withheld. This is a tremendously worthwhile program for both the trainers and the dogs. The inmate trainers learn how to train and work as a team. They are extremely dedicated and spend several hours with the dogs every day. They do an excellent job preparing the dogs for their new families and truly give the dogs a second chance to have forever homes.
KAY CARNEY Hickory, North Carolina Cell: 828-228-2382
Kay Carney is a Certified Dog Trainer and has been rescuing, rehabilitating and training abandoned and unwanted dogs since 1992 when she retired to the mountains of North Carolina. Kay worked closely with the Valley River Humane Society in Murphy, Cherokee County, for many years, volunteering at their shelter and rehabilitating and training dogs to make them more adoptable. Kay also served on their Board of Directors from 1994 to 1999, and was Treasurer of the Valley River Humane Society for fiscal year 1998/1999. Instrumental in founding Graham County Friends of Animals in Robbinsville, Graham County, Kay has served on their Board of Directors and was Treasurer since April of 2003. Through Graham County Friends of Animals she has continued to rescue, rehabilitate, socialize and train dogs for adoption. In addition to training dogs in her home and at the shelter, Kay has instructed foster families on how to socialize and train their dogs. To further her knowledge of dog training, Kay Carney took an intensive professional dog training course with Animal Behavior College, an accredited private vocational school in Northridge, California, and graduated with honors in February 2008. Their curriculum includes both basic obedience training and solving animal behavior problems, with emphasis on using positive reinforcement techniques. Kay is also a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers which emphasizes professionalism, reward based training, and promotes continuing education in canine behavior. **PLEASE NOTE: When you make a donation, you will be redirected to the Paypal site. Your credit card information will NOT be retained on PayPal or this site. Training, Not PunishingYour dog tips over the kitchen trash whenever she's left alone. You scold her when you get home, but she continues to dump the trash. Only now, she cowers and has that "guilty" look. Well, she obviously knows she's done something wrong, right? Wrong. Animals live in the presentYour dog does not associate your anger with actions that he did earlier in the day. If you yell at him when he is excitedly greeting you, he will soon associate your anger with the greeting and not the unacceptable behavior. You need to catch your dog in the act and immediately respond with, "Bad Dog" OR "NO" in order for him to "learn" what bad behavior is. There are other tactics to go along with this, so consult a professional and/or educate yourself about training your dog. It will save you a lot of frustration and allow you to better enjoy your "well behaved" companion animal.
REMEMBER: A tired dog is a good dog.
