Are you ready to give up on your dog because of his/her behavior problems?

It's not your dog that needs training...it's you!  Instead of giving up with behavior problems your pet may have, why not try schooling your dog before you give it up.  Learn your dog's language...once they clearly know what you want from them, most of the time they will deliver.  Stop complaining and start learning.

Cell Dog ,  Beauty 4448

Hi!  Folks call me Beauty because they say I am so beautiful!  I am a Jack Russell mix and was born in April 2007.  I am extremely loyal and sweet, love to sit by my master’s side and be petted, am shy but friendly with people once I get to know them.  I also love children and am very playful with other dogs.
I am very timid so the New Leash on Life Program is excellent for me.  I was fearful of the agility equipment at first, but am becoming more courageous now, and I love to go over the jumps and through the tunnel.  I walk very well on a leash and am learning all my other obedience cues.  I hope my forever family will find me soon – I will shower them with love and make them very happy!

UPDATE ON CELLDOG "ZANEY"

Sent: Thursday, October 29, 2009 3:47 PM
Subject: We love Zanie Adopted 8/27/09

We love Zanie.  She is really fitting in with our pack.  She & Molly (our shephard) are best buds.  She was in a cage all her life and now she has free run on our 16 acres.  She loves hiking and exploring with our family.  she also loves hanging around home and sleeping on the porch.

We were hoping to get a companion for Molly, and a running partner for all of us.  She gets to run 5 miles to 10, 5 days a week.  We didn't know if she could keep up but she's the one that out runs all of us.  She has been a wonderful dog and has surpassed all of our wishes.  Thanks so much for keeping her alive until we could find her.  Sincerely,  Bruce, Jane & Molly Espy

UPDATE!

Abele – Male Labrador Retriever mix, medium size (53 lbs.), born March 2008
ADOPTEDADOPTED
Hi!  My name is Abele and folks tell me I am very handsome and intelligent.  I love people and children, and adore playing with other dogs.  I am so lucky to have been chosen for the New Leash on Life Program and have learned my manners and obedience very quickly.  The agility is lots of fun, and I spend time every day socializing with people and playing with the other dogs.  I walk very well on a leash and love going for long walks.  When not romping and playing, I like to stay right at my trainer’s side.  I am very excited for my new family to find me – I will be a loyal and loving companion and will make my family very proud.
Abele is very healthy, neutered, and his routine shots are up-to-date.

BCFFA also provides the trainer for the inmates and arranges the adoptions.    McGinley goes to the prison two to three times a week to work with the inmates trainers.  After 8 weeks of training and a small graduation ceremony, the dogs go to their new families, and the very next day another training session begins with 3 more dogs.

The dogs are usually very nervous and skittish at first in their new surroundings.  As soon as they arrive, the inmate trainers assume calm, assertive leadership roles providing the dogs with the structure and guidance they need to build their confidence.  The inmates begin immediately teaching them their manners, i.e. to sit while being leashed, remain calm while being petted, take treats gently, not jump up or bolt through gates and doors.  They socialize them with as many people as possible and expose them to the many different activities at the prison.  Of course, they keep the dogs’ kennels very clean, bathe the dogs, brush them regularly, and do a lot of petting, massaging, and gentle tugging of ears and tails to get them used to being around children, and also to be more at ease when going to the vet and groomer.

The inmate trainers train the dogs in basic obedience and also agility.  We keep adding agility equipment and have a fun course.  Agility is a great tool for training in that it builds the dogs’ confidence and also their coordination and, because it is a team sport, the dogs learn to pay attention to their handlers.  Agility is loads of fun and helps to keep the training upbeat and exciting for both the dogs and the trainers.

Throughout all the training and socializing, the trainers  give the dogs praise and rewards when they perform the desired behavior, and when they don’t, the rewards and attention are withheld.

This is a tremendously worthwhile program for both the trainers and the dogs.  The inmate trainers learn how to train and work as a team.  They are extremely dedicated and spend several hours with the dogs every day.   They do an excellent job preparing the dogs for their new families and truly give the dogs a second chance to have forever homes.

KAY CARNEY

Hickory, North Carolina

Cell:  828-228-2382

Kay McGinley

The two dogs on Kay's right are:  Holly - black lab;  Heather - Australian Shepherd mix.  They are both rescues and Kay's dogs.
(On Kay's lap) Jericho - adopted from BCFFA a few months ago by a friend of Kay's and she is working with him to hopefully settle him down!  He is so cute but a little live wire.
On Kay's left is Jeepers from the New Leash on Life Program.  She is fostering him until  he gets adopted.

Kay Carney is a Certified Dog Trainer and has been rescuing, rehabilitating and training abandoned and unwanted dogs since 1992 when she retired to the mountains of North Carolina.  Kay worked closely with the Valley River Humane Society in Murphy, Cherokee County, for many years, volunteering at their shelter and rehabilitating and training dogs to make them more adoptable.  Kay also served on their Board of Directors from 1994 to 1999, and was Treasurer of the Valley River Humane Society for fiscal year 1998/1999.

Instrumental in founding Graham County Friends of Animals in Robbinsville, Graham County, Kay has served on their Board of Directors and was Treasurer since April of 2003.  Through Graham County Friends of Animals she has continued to rescue, rehabilitate, socialize and train dogs for adoption.

In addition to training dogs in her home and at the shelter, Kay has instructed foster families on how to socialize and train their dogs.   She has also given private lessons to dog owners, teaching them how to train their dogs in basic obedience and also working with them to overcome any behavior problems.

To further her knowledge of dog training, Kay Carney took an intensive professional dog training course with Animal Behavior College, an accredited private vocational school in Northridge, California, and graduated with honors in February 2008.  Their curriculum includes both basic obedience training and solving animal behavior problems, with emphasis on using positive reinforcement techniques.

Kay is also a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers which emphasizes professionalism, reward based training, and promotes continuing education in canine behavior.

Training, Not Punishing

Your dog tips over the kitchen trash whenever she's left alone. You scold her when you get home, but she continues to dump the trash. Only now, she cowers and has that "guilty" look. Well, she obviously knows she's done something wrong, right? Wrong.

Animals live in the present

Your dog does not associate your anger with actions that he did earlier in the day. If you yell at him when he is excitedly greeting you, he will soon associate your anger with the greeting and not the unacceptable behavior.

You need to catch your dog in the act and immediately respond with,  "Bad Dog" OR "NO" in order for him to "learn" what bad behavior is.  There are other tactics to go along with this, so consult a professional and/or educate yourself about training your dog.  It will save you a lot of frustration and allow you to better enjoy your "well behaved" companion animal.
