People Seeking a Loving Cat Companion

Adopt a cat from FFA today. Adopting a cat will enrich your world in so many different ways. Here’s how:

  • Cats will keep you entertained with their playful antics.
  • Cats are very affectionate and love to cuddle with you.
  • Having a cat can reduce your blood pressure and prevent heart disease.
  • Cats are very clean -- they bathe themselves!
  • Cats are independent and can be left alone while you are at work.
  • Cats do not need to be housebroken -- using the litter box comes naturally to them.
  • Cats do not need a lot of space. They are perfect pets for apartments and smaller homes.
  • Taking care of a cat can help teach a child responsibility and humane values.
  • Cats get plenty of exercise living indoors. Just 15 minutes of playtime each day will satisfy a cat.
  • Approximately 4 million homeless cats end up in animal shelters every year in the United States. By adopting, you’ll be saving a life.

And don’t forget these important cat care steps once you’ve adopted your new feline friend:

  • Spay/neuter: . Your cat will actually be happier and healthier for it, and you won’t have to worry later about finding homes for a litter of kittens.
  • ID Tags and Microchips: Your cat can’t carry a wallet, so he needs a collar with an ID tag. Be sure to include your cat’s name and your name, address and phone number on the tag. Even indoor cats can slip outside, so make sure he’s wearing the tag at all times. Microchips are another excellent way of identifying your pet. These tiny chips are permanently implanted under your cat’s skin and therefore can never come off or get lost.

Improve your life with a cat’s companionship, and combat the tragedy of overpopulation! Visit us to adopt a cat!

SHELTER HOURS

MONDAY- CLOSED

TUESDAY - FRIDAY:   12 NOON - 5:00 PM

SATURDAY:  10 AM -5PM

SUNDAY:  2 PM - 5 PM

What can you live without today so that a dog or cat,  a kitten or puppy could live?
A few Lattes? A movie? How about a few of those unhealthy, fattening snacks that you buy at the grocery store?
And what could be sweeter than the gift of caring?

Hope

Thank you Sharon Coley, for caring.

When we allow ourselves to let go of hierarchies about who is more important than whom, not worry so much about which species is smarter than the next, or not focus so much on whose body is more perfectly conformed than the next, that's when we can focus on the inside of animals, the part that is just like us. When we put aside our differences of physical form to meet an animal on the inside--as a soul peer--then we can talk with them. Then we can truly hear the thoughts, feelings and stories of animals unhampered by any predisposed ideas of who they are supposed to be.

Do Good. Feel Good.

The Hope Fund is a special account designed to pay expenses for extraordinary care and treatment for animals whose injuries and conditions are exceptionally serious.  The fund was conceived when Sharon Coley (Volunteer) attended a Board of Directors' meeting in May 2008.  Sharon walked into the meeting carrying Hope, a two year old, seven pound Pekingese in her arms to make a plea for her life.  The dog  had been under the wheels when her owner backed out of the driveway, crushing the little dog's pelvis and leaving her paralyzed from the hips down.  The owner refused to seek help, but a neighbor who witnessed what happened took "Hope" and tried to take care of her.  Sharon appealed to the Board of Directors to donate for Hope's care and people emptied their pockets.  Surgery, however, was not an option due to the severity of the injury.  So Hope was fitted with a wheelchair and gets around very well these days.  The fund continues for the purpose of helping animals we rescue with extensive injuries.

One example of the Hope fund in use is the money being made available for the Pit Bull, Phantom (of the Opera) who was turned into Animal Control with the lower portion of his face torn off and multiple bite marks and scars all over his body.  Reconstruction of his face and nose...four operations later, Phantom is living in his forever foster home with a cat and 3 other dog mates and he is doing very well.  THANK YOU David Coffin, DR. MARK MCMAHON OF BURKE ANIMAL CLINIC AND DR. ALAN MOSS OF HICKORY EMERGENCY VETINARIAN CLINIC.

Phantom has gone from a very scared and submissive American Pit Bull Terrier to a playful and happy dog with a wonderful quality of life.

Louie and Phantom sunning at home

Phantom represented Friends For Animals by attending the candle light vigil in Raleigh, NC to make a statement to our legislators about all of the killing of American Pit Bull Terriers that are seized from convicted dog fighters.  These dogs are being rescued from a life of abuse... only to be victimized more by being killed.  The definition of  "dangerous animal" in NC law needs to be broadened.  The way it is now, all of the dogs seized...even new born puppies are being killed.  Dogs are individuals and should be evaluated individually.

We rely on you for our needs, and are dependent on you for our protection and well-being. Please do us no harm; we are helpless before you and at your mercy.

UPDATE ON HOPE

update:  May 6, 2009

HI Everybody,  Just to let you know I am happy in my forever home with my mom, Mara and my dad, John.  Here is a few pictures of me.

Life is good, Hope  (aka Dani)
P.S. My Mom and dad and my whole family love me very, very much and I get spoiled a lot.

THE KISS
She is pregnant;
he had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, while he continued to fight the fire.

When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest.

A photographer from the Charlotte , North Carolina newspaper, noticed her in the distance looking at the fireman.

He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondered what she was going to do.

As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies and kissed him just as the photographer snapped this photograph.

The Animal’s Savior

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter….

The cast-offs of human society.

I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread,

sadness and betrayal.

And I was angry.

“God,” I said, “this is terrible! Why don’t you do something?”

God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly,

“I have done something,” He replied.

“I created you.”
