Everyone is feeling this economic crisis, and the animals are no different.  They need you now more than ever!

We are asking everyone to check your schedules, and see if there is a time you can commit to on a regular basis, even if it is just a few hours a week, to be at the adoption center.

We still need help walking dogs,  keeping the laundry going, filling out adoption contracts, showing people the animals, answering the phones and cleaning the kennels and cat rooms.  A schedule is  posted in the lobby, so come by or call, and see if there is a slot open when you are available.

In thinking of the budget, remember to conserve on water and electricity and all supplies.

Get with friends, put out a bucket and collect stuff at work, whatever you can do!

Thanks to you all, for doing what you do!

BRING US YOUR ALUMINUM TO RECYCLE!

We have a covered kennel set up near the aluminum container for persons to
drop off their bags for recycling.  We need to
assure that we are only putting the appropriate aluminum in the container.
Please remember that the bags need to be sorted and the trash cans out there
emptied when you are trying to find something for volunteers to do.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO ANSWER THE PHONES AND GREET THE PUBLIC WHEN THEY COME IN (especially on the week-ends).

We need to present Davie's Law again in 2010!

Shortly after Sheriff McDevitt took office, Friends For Animals Humane Society of Burke County, NC and The Animal Control staff destroyed the gas chamber !

If you can't adopt one, foster one.

If you can't foster one, sponsor one.

If you can't sponsor one, feed one.

If you can't feed one, send this message to someone who can...or will.

If each one of us would do just one little thing...one little thing...we could become an animal welfare army.

Animals are suffering...won't you help us save them?  Twenty-five homeless pets per day are being killed at the pound every single day right here in Burke County, NC.

Won't you help us save just one?  Please?

IGNITE YOUR PASSION

Passion........it lies in all of us, sleeping....waiting...and
though unwanted....unbidden....it will stir....open its jaws and howl.
It speaks to us....guides us....passion rules us all, and we obey.
What other choice do we have?
Passion is the source of our finest moments.
The joy of love.....the clarity of hatred.... and the ecstasy of grief.
It hurts sometimes more than we can bear.

If we could live without passion maybe we'd know
some kind of peace.....but we would be hollow....
Empty rooms shuttered and dank.
Without passion, we'd be truly dead.

Supporting Friends for Animals is important for us to continue our work.

Sadly, this year has been worse than most. With some pet owners having to make tough decisions, pet food sales and veterinary visits have decreased in the last few months. The cruel truth is that more pets are being dumped, abandoned and turned out onto the street while others are suffering hunger, neglect and abuse.

Your support helps Friends For Animals  rescue these pets in their time of crisis, even during the coldest months of the year. Your gift of $25 or more can mean the difference between life and death for pets with nowhere else to turn.

Please help us with as generous a gift as you can afford.   Even a small amount can go a long way for a pet in need.

Willingness, fresh ideas, commitment, and dedication are vital to carry out the mission of saving animals and preventing animal cruelty.

Lend a hand. Volunteer your time.   Bathe and groom the animals, walk dogs, or play with cats. Stuff envelopes for a mailing. Help publicize an event.  Clean kennels.  Do laundry. Contact us for information on what volunteer opportunities are available

Volunteers are particularly needed at fundraisers and weekend pet adoptions at PetSmart and Petco in Hickory, but even an hour or two a day or week is welcome.  Nothing brightens an animal’s day more than a loving smile, a kind touch and a walk outside in the fresh air....just come and let an an animal know that someone cares enough to be at its side.

We promise that it will do you good as well!

Volunteers meet every third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 PM at the Adoption Center.  Please come and meet us and see what you might be interested in helping out with.  We promise we don't bite.

other pets

So now here we are, all confused and alone
in a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can’t stay to chat.

They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer…
we know that they wonder how long we’ll be here.

We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears –
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can’t adopt us and there’s no room at the inn –
could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?

We count on your kindness each day of the year –
can you give more than hope to everyone here?

Please make a donation to pay for the heat…
and help get us something special to eat.

The shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
and more of us will, if more people will give.

  • BECOME A FOSTER PARENT

Can you give a  good, loving FOSTER HOME for an animal in need / we supply their food and health care. (You have to qualify for this volunteer activity)

Fostering gives an animal a chance to learn to fit into a home environment so that they are ready for family living when their "forever" home comes along.

Fostering is an arrangement provided informally by volunteers.  People interested  in fostering file an application and pass an interview with Toni Davis; then, as animals come to BCFFA with special needs, or BCFFA asks for a particular service, those individuals who filled out the applications are contacted.  Foster homes promote FOREVER HOME adoptions of their fostered guests, though there are some cases of "permanent fosters".  These animals will always receive assistance from BCFFA (medical attention, obedience training, socializing, food) while they are in the care of their foster parent(s).

To become a Foster Parent or even if you just want to know more about fostering...

contact Sheila Cloud   Complete the foster care form.

call the adoption center and ask them to have her call you:

(828) 433-1115

For each animal that is fostered or adopted, TWO animals  are saved...the one you take home and the one we can save from lethal injection at Animal Control because we now have a space open at the shelter.

    Managing Pain In Dogs

In memory of Amber, and to mark the end of National Poison Prevention Week, March 15-21, the ASPCA reminds all pet parents to stay informed about protecting pets from accidental poisonings. Please read our poison prevention tips online

    Pet Poison Alert:  Mothballs
Storing your winter woolens? Seal 'em up tight, pet parents. Certain types of mothballs contain a chemical that can wreak havoc on your animal’s health.

Please, please, please, if you are thinking of giving your pet up, do your best to find another loving and caring home for him. Don’t just dump him somewhere, don’t just desert him outside to fend for himself, don’t just leave him. Do what you can to see that he is taken care of properly.

And may he forgive you for the betrayal…

Please remember that animals feel the pain of cold weather and hot weather.  Bring your pets indoors during extreme weather conditions to prevent them from having to suffer needlessly or make sure they have a comfortable shelter with protection from heat and cold.  With just a little effort on your part, an animal can enjoy a quality, happy life.

     Have a heart.

It has been scientifically proved that all animals (even fish) have central nervous systems designed to feel pain and stress for the purpose of increasing their chances to survive.  Knowing that,  why would anyone take the suffering of any animal lightly just because it is not human.  Pain is pain...suffering is suffering...having a heart and empathy should be emotional responses all humans should be enlightened enough to or strive to possess .  Have a heart, please.  Save the innocent from any more suffering and take the time and your power to do so to be a better human being.
